Wanderlei Silva Confirms Fight With Keith Jardine
Nokaut.com Staff

[image ↗] [image ↗]

Former PRIDE middleweight (205 lb) champion, Wanderlei Silva has confirmed the previously rumored fight on his website. He stated "“I’m leaving right now to sign the Jardine fight contract and you are the first ones to know officially.”

Although no official word has come from Jardine's camp, he is expected to sign the bout agreement in the coming days.

The fight is targeting a May 24 date, placing it on UFC 84.

Silva (31-8-1, 1 NC) is on a three-fight losing streak, falling to knockouts to Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and Dan Henderson, and more recently dropping a decision in his re-debut with the UFC against former light heavyweight champion, Chuck Liddell.

Prior to his recent downfall, Silva was one of the more dominant fighters on the scene, with wins over current UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (2), PRIDE's 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix finalist Ricardo Arona, legendary Japanese fighter Kazushi Sakuraba (3), PRIDE's welterweight (183 lb) and middleweight (205 lb) champion Dan Henderson, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Olympic judo gold medalist Hidehiko Yoshida, Guy Mezger, Yuki Kondo, and Ikuhisa Minowa.

Jardine (13-3-1) is riding high on a decision victory over former UFC champion Chuck Liddell in September. Prior to the Liddell fight, Jardine lost to Houston Alexander, who has since made a name for himself. Before losing to Alexander, Jardine was on a roll with wins over Forrest Griffin and Wilson Gouveia.

UFC 84 will feature a light heavyweight clash between former UFC champion Chuck Liddell and PRIDE's 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, as well as Rashad Evans against Thiago Silva, and Goran Reljic against Wilson Gouveia.

two more matches announced

Pair of Welterweight Bouts Added to 84
noukaut

The UFC has announced a pair of welterweight bouts for UFC 84 24 May in Vegas.

"War Machine" Jon Koppenhaver (5-1) and Yoshiyuki Yoshida (9-2) will match-up well as Jason Tan (5-2) and Dong Hyun Kim (9-1).

Koppenhaver appeared on the sixth season of TUF and is coming off a bloody, brutal slog with cast-mate Jared Rollins (6-4) on the season's finale.

Yoshida debuts in the UFC with an eight-fight streak stretching back to a 2005 Shooto majority technical decision loss to "K-Taro" Keita Nakamura (14-3-2). In 2007 he stopped both Akira Kikuchi (16-4) and Katsuya Inoue (16-5-2) in the first round of Greatest Common Multiple events in Japan.

Tan lost his UFC debut last year by KO to "Irish Hand Grenade" Marcus Davis (14-3), but has since recorded a unanimous decision over "Xandinho" Alexandre Izidro (6-7) in a Cage Gladiators.

DEEP vet Kim hasn't lost since his MMA debut in 2004 versus "RYO" Young Choi (9-4) by unanimous decision, though he only muddled a draw out of Hidehiko Hasegawa (14-9-4) in his most recent start.

With it being the much publicised last match Tito Ortiz is having with the company after his falling out with company president Dana White; Tito's partner Jenna Jameson mentions Dana in her latest blog

I usually don’t comment on nastiness in the press, but I couldn’t ignore Dana Whites’ ramblings any longer. His latest interview referring to Tito as a "moron" for the hundredth time... will not go unnoticed.

so here goes...

Dana White - Pre Pubesent Schoolyard Bully
By Jenna Jameson

Dana White’s insistance of my lack of brain power smacks of 18th century
beliefs that women (all women) are inferior to the male species.
Ignoring a persons achievements or simply their IQ due to the fact they
have a vagina instead of a penis, explains Danas simplicity. He has a a
track record in every conversation, if he needs to describe someone who
he feels threatened by, or weakened by... he lashes out in the manner of
a 12 year old, by accusing the other of unintelligence. I for one, would
enjoy seeing data that backs up his hasty words. In my experience anyone
that reverts to this type of defense is simply insecure about
themselves, and tend to try to shift the glaring light of truth away
from his profane grammatically incorrect rantings. The most interesting
story here, is the silence by the UFC. How do they sit back, silent, and
allow their "figure head" to endanger the worth of their empire?
Business must be tended to with a level head, or it usually self
implodes. We all are starting to witness the Dana White propaganda
wheels being set in motion with every new self agrandizing Dana
interview. When are the Fertitas going to step to the plate and put a sock in Dana’s hate spewing mouth? It seems to be depreciating their
companies worth with every syllable. It is plainly obvious that it isn’t
just a coincidence that so many champions have chosen to test the waters
beyond the UFC trainwreck. Their defection to greener pastures is no
longer just a money issue, but more of a continued lack of disrespect on
Dana’s part. It troubles me that this could be the downfall of such a
ground breaking monumental company, all due to one mans over abundance
of testosterone. In closing, maybe the UFC should mandate steroid
testing to company presidents, then maybe the company could continue its
massive dominance... with a soft hand.

and that’s all I have to say about that...

heres another match announcement

Emerson (not Stephens) vs. Etim booked for UFC 84
by Dann Stupp [mmajunkie]

British fighter Terry Etim (10-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will meet lightweight Rob Emerson (7-6 MMA, 1-0 UFC) -- not Jeremy Stephens -- at a UFC 84 event that takes place May 24 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The bout was today added to UFC.com's Events page.

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported, Etim was originally slated to face up-and-comer Stephens. However, we've since been told that Stephens was pulled from the bout to deal with a "minor legal situation," according to a source close to the fighter.

Stephens remains with the UFC and is expected to be added to a fight card this summer.

Etim will return to the octagon for the first time since a unanimous-decision loss to Gleison Tibau at this past September's UFC 75 event in London.

Prior to the loss -- the first of Etim's career -- the 22-year-old Brit made his UFC debut with a stunning comeback over Matt Grice at UFC 70. After getting beaten around for much of the first round, Etim reversed his position and locked in a fight-ending guillotine choke. He earned a $30,000 "Submission of the Night" bonus for the performance.

After dealing with legal problems of his own, Emerson appeared on "The Ultimate Fighter 5," and he met Gray Maynard at the show's live finale. The fight was ruled a co-contest when Emerson was slammed to the mat and injured -- while Maynard appeared temporarily to knock himself unconscious.

Emerson returned at UFC 81 in February and scored a split-decision victory over Keita Nakamura.

The Etim-Emerson fight will air on the un-televised preliminary card of "UFC 84: Ill Will," which is set for pay-per-view. UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn meets Sean Sherk in the night's main event.

Both current UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn and former champion Sean Sherk were tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission under their new random testing policy. Remeau Sokoudjou interview

Sokoudjou looks to return to winning ways at UFC 84
mmajunkie

Five months after his disappointing UFC-debut loss to Lyoto Machida, Team Quest's Remeau Sokoudjou (4-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is ready to prove he belongs among the elite in the light-heavyweight division. The first step in that quest is a UFC 84 clash with fellow judoka Kazuhiro Nakamura (11-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) on Saturday.

Sokoudjou discussed his preparation for the bout while a recent guest on TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), a content partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

"I trained really hard," Sokoudjou said. "Coming from a loss, I don't want to have two losses in a row on my record. So I made sure I was in the gym all the time, enough time for me to come back and do what I usually do."

That time in the gym was spent in intense training sessions with a world-class roster of teammates, including UFC and PRIDE veteran Dan Henderson and K-1 star Peter Graham.

"I wish it was (just) intense," the 24-year-old said. "It's a nightmare because we got a bunch of big guys trying to hurt you, trying to destroy you. It's a nightmare to train out there. You got guys like Peter Grahame trying to kick your head off your body. You got Dan Henderson trying to body lock you and slam you on the ground. ... It's pretty ugly when you got a fight coming up, training with all those guys."

"Judo Thierry" said he will be bringing a different game plan to the octagon in this bout, and he plans on doing "whatever it takes" to return to winning ways.

"I used to think, 'You know what? I'm a Judo guy. I'm going to go there and do my Judo and throw people around,'" Sokoudjou explained. "I came in there, I got thrown off by my game plan, I didn't know what I was doing, and I lost. And after that I told myself, 'You know what? I'm going to go in there right now and do whatever it takes for me to win the fight.' ... If I need to use some of my Judo skills, I'm going to use it, but if I have to go in there and punch, kick, knee someone on their head, I'll do that."

Sokoudjou knows he must be prepared for anything, as the tougher-than-his-record-suggests Nakamura has shown the ability to implement a wide array of game plans throughout his career.

"When [Nakamura] fought Wanderlei (Silva) ... he was throwing bombs all day," the Cameroon native said. "But when he fought (Kevin) Randleman, when he fought a grappler, he was patient while he was in the clinch. When he fought (Lyoto) Machida, he kind of rushed in, and spent most of the time in the clinch. So, I had a chance to watch a bunch of his fights, and I got prepared for any kind of game plan he can come up with."

So how does Sokoudjou, who was a prized-free-agent signing for the UFC In 2007, feel he would measure up in the division if he can earn a victory?

"I don't know," Sokoudjou admitted. "I'm not (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva. I'm just a fighter, and that's my hope. I want to make sure my next fight brings me to the next level, but as far as what's going to happen afterwards, I have no control because Joe Silva and whoever is behind the UFC are the people controlling the fighters. But I'm looking forward to moving to the next level. ... I'm going to go out there and do my best, and hopefully, that will allow me to fight a top guy."

Sokoudjou also explained why he won't be entering the octagon with his "Predator" mask on Saturday night and why his Cameroon-resident parents still don't know he's a professional MMA fighter. All fighters made weight today at the official 84 weight-ins and everything is set for tomorrow's show. The UFC 84 is probably the most explosive show so far in 2008 and current lightweight champion BJ Penn and former lightweight champion Sean Sherk will finally square off.
“I’m gonna give everything I can,” said Penn. “I’m not gonna stop the whole night. I’m not gonna stop.”

“I’ve got a job to do,” said Sherk, who will be looking to regain the crown stripped from him after a positive test result for nandrolone last year, a result he still vehemently denies. “I put all that behind me…I think you guys are in for a hell of a night.”

No one made a bigger splash than Tito Ortiz. Fighting for what will likely be his final time in the UFC, thanks to a heated rivalry with UFC president Dana White, Ortiz was adorned in a T-shirt that read, "Dana is my bitch." (White didn't attend the weigh-ins.)

finished watching it yesterday. For me the best match on the card was Machida against Tito. if Tito managed to hang on to the triangle choke in the last 20 seconds of round 3 he could have nicked it. All in all I agree with machida winning the match on pounts.

BJ Penn looked lethal as always. i thinks hes the most all rounded MMA fighter going . He can stand up and take it to the ground. Brilliant
Testicles 27 May 2008, 12:29
tito said in the post match talk he would take two weeks off and then decide whether he will fight in the UFC again or not. Personally I just cant see it happening
the_goon 27 May 2008, 19:15
I didn't realise it was on last night but I caught the whole of the BJ Penn vs Sean Sherk fight. It wasn't too bad, nice to see them both standing for so long but I wanted to see more of what Sherk had to offer on the mat. Not really seen anything of him before last night. Had only heard of the guy.

Gutted for Tito. Despite all his arrogance and dick head moments, he's still probably my fave (one of my fave) from the UFC.
Lobo 27 May 2008, 19:26
Sherks a good fighter. i remember him giving Matt Hughes quite a match a few years back. He usually bleeds/get cut alot and had a bloodbath of a match against Kenny Florian

UFC 84 fighters' salaries: payroll tops a million bucks
by MMAjunkie.com

UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn defended his title at Saturday's UFC 84 event, and he picked up the night's biggest reported paycheck -- $250,000 -- in the process.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today obtained the list of official UFC 84 salaries directly from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

UFC 84 took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. A sold-out crowd of 14,773 created a live gate of $3.7 million.

In addition to Penn's quarter-of-a-million dollars, Tito Ortiz picked up $210,000 in defeat. Wanderlei Silva got $150,000 for his victory, and Lyoto Machida got $100,000 for his.

The total disclosed payroll for the event was $1,098,000.

The full list of salaries included:

B.J. Penn ($250,000) def. Sean Sherk ($35,000)
Wanderlei Silva ($150,000) def. Keith Jardine ($10,000)
Goran Reljic ($6,000) def. Wilson Gouveia ($18,000)
Lyoto Machida ($100,000) def. Tito Ortiz ($210,000)
Thiago Silva ($50,000) def. Antonio Mendes ($4,000)
Rousimar Palhares ($10,000) def. Ivan Salaverry ($20,000)
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou ($80,000) def. Kazuhiro Nakamura ($20,00O)
Rich Clementi ($40,000) def. Terry Etim ($10,000)
Yoshiyuki Yoshida ($12,000) def. Jon Koppenhaver ($8,000)
Dong Hyun Kim ($40,000) def. Jason Tan ($3000)
Shane Carwin ($12,000) def. Christian Wellisch ($10,000)
All of the winning fighters' salaries included 50 percent of the total to show and 50 percent as a win bonus -- except Wanderlei Silva, who received a flat $150,000 for the fight.

Now, the usual disclaimer: the figures do not include deductions for items such as insurance, licenses and taxes. Additionally, the figures do not include money paid by sponsors, which can oftentimes be a substantial portion of a fighter's income. They also do not include any other "locker-room" or special bonuses the UFC oftentimes pays. In other words, these are simply base salaries reported to the commission and do not reflect entire compensation packages for the event.

how come Jardine so little in comparison to some of the others ??? Yeah he lost but with some of the victories he has had in the past I would have thought he would have been able to negotiate a better puse than that ???!!!
