Barrera wins after judging error

Marco Antonio Barrera retained his WBC super featherweight title on Saturday by winning a controversial split decision over American Rocky Juarez.
The bout was called a draw but it was announced 15 minutes later that one of the judge's scores had been added up wrong and Barrera had in fact won.

There were no knockdowns, but Juarez rocked Barrera, 32, several times.

The champion suffered a bloodied nose and damaged left eye while Juarez , 25, appeared to be unmarked at the finish.

Duane Ford scored the fight 115-114 for Juarez while Anek Hongtogkham gave Barrera the edge, 115-113.

Ken Morita initially made it even at 114-114 only for his score to be amended to 115-114 in Barrera's favour.

Barrera, from Mexico City, raised his record to 62-4, with 42 knockouts while the defeat made it two losses in a row for Juarez, the 2000 Olympic silver medalist from Houston.

Earlier, compatriot Jorge Rodrigo Barrios wasted little time knocking out Janos Nagy in the first round of their WBO super featherweight bout.

Barrera foils Juarez revenge bid

Marco Antonio Barrera retained his WBC super featherweight title in Las Vegas with a unanimous decision over American challenger Rocky Juarez.
Judges awarded Barrera the victory by 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113 in a rematch of a May bout in LA that ended in a controversial Barrera triumph.

"I moved very fast, I used my jab. I knew if I had to take him to the school I would do it," said the Mexican.

Barrera improved his record to 63-4 while Juarez fell to 25-3.

In May, the first fight was initially announced to the crowd as a draw.

But minutes later Barrera was awarded a 12-round majority decision when two judges scored it for him by 115-114 and 115-113. The other saw Juarez as a 115-114 winner.

"I learned never fight to the level to the challenger," Barrera said. "I'm the champion. I need to use my experience."

Barrera controlled the tempo in Las Vegas with a conservative style, swelling Juarez's right eye in the fifth round.

"He caught me with a good uppercut and closed my eye," Juarez said.

"He fought a good fight. He kept a good jab. He kept retreating. I wasn't able to get a very good shot at him. When I got inside he wouldn't trade with me.

"He just smothered me and waited for the referee to break him up."

Juarez was off-balance much of the night in the tactical duel, Barrera guarding and moving well but neither man throwing combinations.

Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao is the rival Barrera wants next.

"He's the best fighter for me," he said. "He throws punches very fast."
