The original poster pictured featured the words "These are the armies of the night. They are 100,000 strong. They outnumber the cops five to one. They could run New York City." This slogan caused many people to be outraged, and some even tried to ban the film.
The film supposedly caused many gang outbreaks in large cities, but those rumors could have been made up by those who wanted it banned.
It is based on the novel by Sol Yurick, who bases his novel on Xenophons Anabasis. Actually the movie is closer to Anabasis than to Yurick's novel.
Hill originally wanted the Warriors to be an all black gang.
The fight with the Punks, (bathroom scene) took 5 eleven hour days to film.
It is Mercedes Ruhels first screen role.
James Remar (Ajax), David Patrick Kelly (Luther) and Marcelino Sánchez (Rembrandt) went on to star in 48 Hours.
Deborah Van Valkenburgh was one of Ted Knights daughters on "Too Close For Comfort".
Michael Beck went on to star in "Xanadu" with Oliva Newton John. The film flopped.
90% of the subway shots were done at the same location, 72nd St. and the west side.
The television version started with a day shoot at Coney Island with Dorsey Wright and Pamela Portier. The Producers cut this scene stating the only day scene should be at the end of the film after a night of horror.
Tom Waites left the film halfway through filming and was replaced with a grip who was tossed onto the train tracks.
Real street gangs made it into the film.
The Warriors vests were pleather, fake leather.
The Furies were all over 30 and were the stunt crew. All were from Stunt's Unlimited.
The Warriors sign that was painted on the bath house for the lobby card photo (see photo & sounds-photo #1) was actually painted over a real gangs tag. The gang didn't take to lightly to this, so the producers paid them to be in the film.
Marcelino Sánchez (Rembrandt) passed away in 1992 from cancer.
The police officer that Swan threw the baseball bat at went on to play Billy Bear in "48 Hours". His only line in "The Warriors" was "Hey!"
